Metal siding has come a long way from the chalky aluminum of past decades. Today's coated steel and aluminum products come in many colors and profiles that suit modern homes, farmhouses, garages, and storefronts. Our fully insured crews bring 15+ years of experience and 300+ projects to the job, and we install metal roofing too, so the two can be matched.
Why does metal siding hold up in Capital Region weather?
Metal is not affected by moisture the way wood is, and it does not become brittle in cold the way vinyl can. With the right coating and installation, it handles the full range of upstate weather.
- Freeze-thaw: metal does not absorb water, so freezing cannot split it.
- Heavy snow and ice: steel in particular resists damage from snow sliding off roofs and from ice buildup.
- Summer humidity: metal does not support mold growth, and modern coatings protect against corrosion.
- Wind-driven rain: interlocking panels and concealed fasteners, backed by house wrap and flashing, keep water out.

What is the difference between steel and aluminum siding?
Steel siding is heavier and more dent resistant, which makes it a strong pick for homes that see hail, falling ice, or heavy use. It relies on its coating to prevent rust, so scratches should be touched up. Our steel siding article covers it in depth.
Aluminum siding is lighter and naturally resists rust, but it dents more easily. It is often used to match or repair existing aluminum siding on older homes. Our aluminum siding guide explains when it makes sense.
Compared with vinyl siding, metal is more rigid and fire resistant. Compared with James Hardie fiber cement siding, it is lighter and its factory coating does not need repainting, though the look is quite different. See our siding services overview for every option.
What Capital Region homeowners say
Rated 5 stars by homeowners and business owners across the Capital Region. Read all reviews.
“My wife and I recently hired Mastaba Homes after some high winds partially tore back our sidings fascia. They were prompt in responding to our online submission (received a phone call in less than 15 mins, after business hours), and …”
“Jeff and his crew recently replaced our roof and are in the process of installing new window and siding on our home. The crew was in and out in one day and aside from the new roof, you couldn't tell anyone was there. Very professional, attentive, and fairly priced. Can't wait until the board and batten and new windows are up! I recommend to give them a call or email if interested in some renovations.”
“Great experience with Mastaba Roofing. The team was professional, on time, and delivered quality work. They explained everything clearly, worked efficiently, and left the place very clean. The whole process was smooth and stress-free. I would definitely recommend them for reliable roofing or home exterior work.”
How do we install metal siding?
1. Site inspection and estimate
We assess the walls, framing, and roof lines, discuss profile and color, and provide a free written estimate.
2. Removal and wall preparation
Old siding is removed, damaged sheathing is replaced, and walls are checked for flatness so the panels sit straight.
3. Barrier and flashing
House wrap is lapped correctly, and we flash windows, doors, and every roof-to-wall joint.
4. Panel installation
Metal expands and contracts with temperature, so we fasten panels to allow movement. We use compatible fasteners and trim to avoid corrosion between different metals.
5. Trim, soffit, fascia, and cleanup
Metal trim, soffit, and fascia finish the job. If those areas are damaged, our soffit and fascia repair service takes care of them. We clean up all metal scraps and walk the site with you.
When should metal or aluminum siding be repaired or replaced?
- Dents from hail or impacts that collect water or spoil the look.
- Chalky, faded, or peeling coating on older aluminum.
- Rust spots on steel where the coating has been scratched.
- Loose panels that rattle or lift in wind.
- Water stains inside the home along exterior walls.
Small areas of damage can often be fixed by our siding repair team without replacing whole walls.
What affects the cost of metal siding?
Steel versus aluminum, panel gauge, coating type, and profile are the biggest factors. Vertical panels, board and batten, and premium finishes cost more than standard lap siding.
Wall area, building height, trim complexity, and sheathing repairs also affect price. Commercial jobs may involve different framing and access requirements. Your free written estimate breaks everything down.
What warranty and financing come with metal siding?
Metal siding installs carry our 10 year workmanship warranty. Coating and product warranties vary by manufacturer, and we explain them and register them for you.
Homeowners can use $0 down financing up to 140 months, subject to credit approval.
Can you match metal siding with a metal roof?
Yes. Because we install metal roofing as well as metal siding, we can coordinate colors, trim, and profiles across the whole building. A matched roof and wall system is a popular look on modern farmhouses, garages, and commercial buildings.
Coordination also matters for performance. Metal roofs shed snow quickly, so the wall below needs solid flashing, a proper drip edge, and siding that can take the occasional impact. When one crew plans the roof edge, the soffit and fascia, and the siding together, those details line up and water stays on the outside of the building.
Even if you are only replacing the siding now, we will look at the roof edge during your estimate and point out anything that should be addressed while the walls are open.

Metal and Aluminum Siding in Albany and the Capital Region: frequently asked questions
Should I choose steel or aluminum siding?
Steel is heavier and more dent resistant, so it suits homes exposed to hail, ice, or heavy use. Aluminum is lighter and naturally resists rust, but it dents more easily. We will recommend the right metal based on your home and how it is used.
Does metal siding dent from hail?
Aluminum can dent from hail, while steel is more resistant, especially in heavier gauges. Even steel can dent in severe storms. Damaged panels can usually be replaced individually.
Will steel siding rust in upstate New York?
Modern steel siding is coated to resist corrosion, and it performs well when the coating is intact. Scratches that expose bare metal should be touched up promptly. We use compatible fasteners and trim to avoid corrosion where different metals meet.
Is metal siding loud during rain or hail?
Metal siding installed over sheathing and house wrap is generally not noticeably louder than other siding. Rain strikes walls far less directly than roofs. Insulation in the walls further reduces sound.
Can old aluminum siding be repaired or repainted?
Yes, in many cases. Chalky or faded aluminum can be cleaned and painted with a suitable coating, and dented panels can sometimes be replaced. Finding matching profiles for older aluminum can be difficult, so we check availability before recommending a repair.
Is metal siding a good option for commercial and agricultural buildings?
Metal siding is widely used on commercial buildings, garages, and barns because it is durable, noncombustible, and low maintenance. We serve both residential and commercial customers. We provide a free written estimate for commercial projects too.
