Fiber cement is heavy, rigid, and unforgiving of shortcuts. It needs the right cutting methods, clearances, and fasteners. Our fully insured crews bring 15+ years of experience and 300+ completed projects, and every job starts with a free written estimate.
Why does fiber cement work well in Capital Region weather?
Fiber cement is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers pressed into dense boards. It does not rot, insects do not eat it, and it will not burn, which makes it a strong match for a climate that throws every kind of weather at a house.
- Freeze-thaw: the boards are dimensionally stable, so they move far less than vinyl as temperatures swing.
- Snow and ice: rigid boards hold up to snow sliding off roofs and piling against walls, provided we keep proper clearance from grade and roofing.
- Summer humidity: fiber cement does not feed mold the way untreated wood can.
- Wind-driven rain: heavy boards stay put in high winds, and we back them with lapped house wrap and flashing.
Our fiber cement siding guide covers the material in more detail, and our James Hardie siding review looks at the brand specifically.
How does fiber cement compare to vinyl and engineered wood?
| Feature | Fiber cement | Vinyl | LP SmartSide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painting | Takes paint well, repaint over time | Never painted | Takes paint well, repaint over time |
| Rot and insects | Resists both | Does not rot | Treated core resists both |
| Fire | Noncombustible | Melts | Treated wood product |
| Weight | Heaviest | Lightest | Lighter than fiber cement |
| Rigidity | Very stiff, crisp lines | Flexible | Stiff, good impact strength |
If the weight or install cost of fiber cement is a concern, LP SmartSide engineered wood siding is the closest alternative. If low upkeep matters most, look at vinyl siding installation. Our Hardie board vs LP SmartSide comparison lays out the tradeoffs, and the siding services overview compares all six options.
What Capital Region homeowners say
Rated 5 stars by homeowners and business owners across the Capital Region. Read all reviews.
“My wife and I recently hired Mastaba Homes after some high winds partially tore back our sidings fascia. They were prompt in responding to our online submission (received a phone call in less than 15 mins, after business hours), and …”
“Jeff and his crew recently replaced our roof and are in the process of installing new window and siding on our home. The crew was in and out in one day and aside from the new roof, you couldn't tell anyone was there. Very professional, attentive, and fairly priced. Can't wait until the board and batten and new windows are up! I recommend to give them a call or email if interested in some renovations.”
“Great experience with Mastaba Roofing. The team was professional, on time, and delivered quality work. They explained everything clearly, worked efficiently, and left the place very clean. The whole process was smooth and stress-free. I would definitely recommend them for reliable roofing or home exterior work.”
How do we install James Hardie siding?
1. Estimate and product selection
We inspect walls, sheathing, roof lines, and trim, then help you choose a profile and color. You receive a free written estimate with everything itemized.
2. Tear off and wall prep
Old siding comes off, and we replace any rotted sheathing. Walls must be flat and solid because fiber cement will telegraph every bump.
3. Weather barrier and flashing
We install house wrap shingle style, flash windows and doors, and set step and kick-out flashing at every roof-to-wall joint.
4. Cutting and installation
Fiber cement produces silica dust when cut, so we use dust controlling methods and cut outdoors. Boards are fastened per the manufacturer's instructions with the required gaps and clearances, and every cut edge is sealed or primed.
5. Trim, soffit, and finish
We install trim, then coordinate soffit and fascia. If those are rotted, our soffit and fascia repair service fixes them first. We finish with cleanup and a walkthrough.
When is it time to replace your siding with fiber cement?
- Wood siding with recurring rot, peeling paint, or insect damage.
- Vinyl that is cracked, faded, or loose after years of storms.
- Existing fiber cement with cracked boards or failing caulk joints.
- Moisture stains or soft drywall on the inside of exterior walls.
- A home near trees or neighbors where fire resistance matters to you.
If only a few boards are damaged, our siding repair team can replace them without redoing the whole wall.
What drives the cost of fiber cement siding?
Fiber cement costs more to install than vinyl because the boards are heavier, take longer to cut and fasten, and need trim and painting. Factory finished boards cost more up front but save a separate painting step.
Wall area, number of stories, window and door count, sheathing repairs, and the style you choose all move the total. We give you a free written estimate so there are no surprises.
What warranty and financing are available?
Our fiber cement installs carry a 10 year workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties vary by product and finish, and we explain the terms and register them for you.
$0 down financing up to 140 months is available, subject to credit approval.
Why does roof coordination matter for fiber cement?
Fiber cement boards must be held off roof surfaces by a set clearance so they do not sit in melting snow or runoff. That gap only works if the step flashing and kick-out flashing behind it are installed correctly in the first place.
As a company that installs roofs and siding, we plan those joints as one system. The drip edge, gutters, and top course of siding are set so water drains away from the wall, and soffit vents are kept clear for attic airflow. If you are planning a roof replacement in the next few years, ask us about doing both together.

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding in Albany NY: frequently asked questions
Is James Hardie siding a good choice for New York winters?
Yes. Fiber cement is dimensionally stable, does not absorb water the way wood can, and is not prone to freeze-thaw damage when installed and sealed correctly. Proper clearances from grade and roofing are what keep it performing through snow season.
Does fiber cement siding have to be painted?
Fiber cement needs a finish to protect it. You can choose factory finished boards or primed boards that are painted on site. Either way, the paint will eventually need refreshing, though fiber cement generally holds paint longer than wood.
Why does fiber cement siding cost more to install than vinyl?
The boards are heavier, take more labor to handle and cut, and require specific fasteners, clearances, and dust control. Trim and painting add steps that vinyl does not need. The result is a rigid, fire resistant wall that many homeowners feel is worth the difference.
Is cutting fiber cement on site safe for my family?
Cutting fiber cement releases crystalline silica dust, which is a respiratory hazard. We cut outdoors, away from open windows, using dust controlling tools and methods. Keep children and pets away from the cutting station while the crew works.
Is fiber cement siding fire resistant?
Fiber cement is noncombustible, which is one of its main advantages over vinyl and wood. It will not ignite or melt from nearby heat the way some other materials can. That does not make a house fireproof, but it improves the wall's resistance.
Can fiber cement match the look of wood clapboard or shingles?
Yes. Fiber cement comes in lap boards, shingle panels, and vertical styles, many with a wood grain texture. Once painted, it gives a classic clapboard or shingle look without the rot risk of real wood.
