Cedar is beautiful, naturally resistant to decay, and easy to repair one board at a time. It also asks more of you than vinyl or fiber cement, because it needs regular staining or painting. We are upfront about that, and with 15+ years of experience and 300+ projects behind us, we install it to give the finish the best possible chance.

Why Cedar

Is cedar siding a good fit for Capital Region weather?

Cedar contains natural oils that help it resist decay and insects, and it is stable compared with many other woods. In our climate, the difference between cedar that lasts and cedar that fails comes down to installation details and upkeep.

  • Freeze-thaw cycles: sealing all sides of each board limits the moisture that freezes inside the wood.
  • Heavy snow and ice: we keep the bottom course well above grade and roofing so snow does not sit against end grain.
  • Summer humidity: a ventilated rainscreen gap behind the siding lets boards dry out, which helps the finish last.
  • Wind-driven rain: proper laps, flashing, and house wrap send water down and away.

Our guide to wood siding types explains the profiles, and our cedar shake siding guide covers shakes and shingles specifically.

Compare Options

How does cedar compare to other siding materials?

Cedar has the most authentic look, but it needs the most maintenance. If you love the wood look and want less upkeep, LP SmartSide engineered wood siding offers a similar appearance with a treated core. James Hardie fiber cement siding can mimic clapboard or shingles and adds fire resistance.

Many homeowners in historic neighborhoods still choose cedar because it matches the original character of the house. Our siding services overview compares every option side by side.

“My wife and I recently hired Mastaba Homes after some high winds partially tore back our sidings fascia. They were prompt in responding to our online submission (received a phone call in less than 15 mins, after business hours), and …”

“Jeff and his crew recently replaced our roof and are in the process of installing new window and siding on our home. The crew was in and out in one day and aside from the new roof, you couldn't tell anyone was there. Very professional, attentive, and fairly priced. Can't wait until the board and batten and new windows are up! I recommend to give them a call or email if interested in some renovations.”

Our Process

How do we install wood and cedar siding?

1. Inspection and estimate

We inspect the walls, existing siding, trim, and roof lines, then discuss profile, grade, and finish. You receive a free written estimate.

2. Removal and sheathing repair

We remove old siding and repair or replace damaged sheathing so the wall is solid and flat.

3. Weather barrier, flashing, and rainscreen

House wrap and flashing go on first, then furring strips or a drainage mat where specified to create a drying gap.

4. Priming and installation

Boards are primed or sealed on all sides, including cut ends, before they go up. We use corrosion resistant fasteners so they do not stain the wood.

5. Trim, soffit, fascia, and finish

We install trim and coordinate soffit and fascia work. If yours need attention, our soffit and fascia repair service handles it at the same time. Then the stain or paint is applied and we walk the job with you.

Warning Signs

What are the signs your wood siding needs attention?

  • Soft or crumbling boards, especially near the ground, decks, or roof edges.
  • Paint or stain that peels within a year or two of being applied.
  • Split, cupped, or warped boards.
  • Holes from woodpeckers or insects.
  • Black staining around nails, which can mean the fasteners are corroding.

Cedar is easy to repair in sections. Our siding repair service replaces damaged boards and blends them with the existing wall, and our cedar siding maintenance guide shows how to keep the rest in good shape.

Cost Factors

What affects the cost of cedar siding?

Cedar grade, profile, and finish make a large difference. Clear, knot free boards cost more than knotty grades, and hand split shakes take more labor than clapboard. Back priming, rainscreen strips, and the stain or paint system add to the total.

Home size, number of stories, and sheathing repairs also matter. Your free written estimate lists each item so you can make choices that fit your budget.

Warranty and Financing

What warranty and financing are available for cedar siding?

Our cedar installs carry a 10 year workmanship warranty. Product warranties vary depending on the wood and finish used, and we explain them clearly.

$0 down financing up to 140 months is available, subject to credit approval.

Roof and Walls

Why have your roofer install your cedar siding?

Wood siding is most vulnerable where it meets the roof. Snow melts against the wall, ice dams back water up under shingles, and any gap in the step flashing sends that water straight into the end grain of the boards behind it.

Because Mastaba Roofing handles both roofing and siding, we install the step flashing, kick-out flashing, and drip edge in the right order with the siding, not as an afterthought. We also keep the bottom of each cedar course clear of the roof surface so it can dry between storms.

If your roof is also aging, replacing both at once means one crew, one schedule, and one set of scaffolding and cleanup. We will tell you honestly whether that makes sense for your home or whether the roof still has good years left.

Common Questions

Wood and Cedar Siding in Albany and the Capital Region: frequently asked questions

How often does cedar siding need to be stained or sealed?

It depends on the finish, sun exposure, and how much weather each wall takes. South and west facing walls usually need attention sooner than shaded ones. Inspect the finish every year and recoat when it starts to look dry, faded, or worn.

Cedar shakes or cedar clapboard: which suits my house better?

Clapboard gives a clean, horizontal look that fits colonials and farmhouses. Shakes and shingles have a more textured, rustic appearance common on Cape Cods and craftsman homes. Some homes use both, with shingles on gables and clapboard on the main walls.

Does cedar siding attract woodpeckers or insects?

Cedar's natural oils help repel many insects, but woodpeckers sometimes drill into wood siding, especially if insects are present. Keeping the wall well finished and fixing damage quickly helps. Persistent woodpecker problems may point to an insect issue worth investigating.

Can you replace a few damaged cedar boards without redoing the wall?

Yes. One advantage of wood siding is that individual boards can be removed and replaced. New boards will look different until they are finished and weathered, so we stain or paint them to blend with the surrounding wall.

Why should cedar boards be primed on the back and ends?

Sealing all six sides of each board limits how much moisture the wood absorbs from behind and through cut ends. That reduces cupping, splitting, and finish failure. It is a small step during installation that pays off over the life of the siding.

Is real wood siding a good choice for a historic Albany home?

Often it is, because wood matches the original character of older homes. Some historic districts have rules about exterior materials, so check with your town before choosing. We can help you weigh cedar against lower maintenance alternatives that mimic its look.
